 E-Mail

INTRODUCTION

The E-mail is probably one of the most popular features, which came alongside with the creation of the Internet. E-mail is part of the standard TCP/IP set of protocols. Sending messages is typically done by SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol). Today, almost every person on the planet has an email address somewhere, be it a self hosted email address or an email address with some of the fee email providers, such as Google or Yahoo. In its simplest form, e-mail is an electronic message sent from one device to another. 

E-mail means electronic mail. E-mail is the most widely used service on the Internet. The messages are sent electronically. With the inception of this tool, sending of message has become fast  and virtually instantaneously. While most messages go from computer to computer, e-mail can also be sent and received by mobile phones. With e-mail, you can send or receive personal and business-related messages with attachments, such as photos or formatted documents. You can also send music, video clips and software programs. Advantages of E-mail

E-mail is becoming popular as a message sending mode. E-mail provides the following advantages:

  • Cost Effective: The message sent through e-mail costs very low. It is very cheaper than courier of fax.
  • High Speed: E-mail can be sent very fast and almost instantaneously. Email is effective in providing quick answers.
  • Easy to use: It is easy to use e-mail tool on the Internet. You can organize your daily correspondence, send and receive electronic messages and save them on computers.
  • Time saving: it saves your lot of time. Email can distribute information quickly to many people for the time it takes to email one person.
  • Wastage Reduction: A lot of paper work in saved which also reduces file maintenance.

Disadvantage of E-mail

In-spite of its several uses, E-mail suffers from the following limitations:

  • Hardware Requirements: E-mail messages are sent through computer and other devices. If absence of any devices you cannot use the facility of e-mail.
  • Lack of Expressions: You cannot convey your expressions and extra posture in your message.
  • Risk of virus: Emails may carry viruses. These are small programs that harm your computer system.
  • Unwanted mails: Many people or organization send unwanted emails to others for advertise. These are called spam mails. It takes a lot of time to filter out the unwanted emails from those that are really important. 

Structure of E-mail

An e-mail message is made up of binary data, usually in the ASCII text format. ASCII code describes the character you see on the computer screen. There are five section in an e-mail message:

  1. E-mail address 
  2. Header 
  3. Body 
  4. Signature (Optional)
  5. Attachment (Optional)

Understanding an E-mail Address

A successful delivery of an email requires having a valid email address fro both the sender and receiver. In an email address, the person part is the user id and the place is the domain name of the remote computer. A @ (pronounced as "at") is used to separate the two parts of an email address.
  • The  domain name of the mail server computer on which you have and e-mail account.
  • Your personal identity or account name (user name) on that mail server.

Header

The header of an e-mail message is the uppermost section. It displays information regarding the status of the messages. A header records message information and provides it to the recipients of the message. The principal headers fields are listed below:
